Thattai Recipe – Thattai is a popular South Indian Festival recipe. Thattu vadai is made mainly for gokulashtami and Diwali. This crispy and crunchy thattai made with rice flour, red chili powder and soaked channa dal.

Thattai/ Pappu Chekkalu Recipe

Ingredients For Thatti:

  • 2 cups rice flour
  • 1/4 cup fried gram flour (pottukadalai powder)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp red chili powder or to taste
  • 4 garlic cloves
  • 2 tbsp channa dal
  • 1 tbsp finely chopped curry leaves
  • big pinch of asafoetida
  • salt to taste
  • oil for deep fry

How To Make Thattai Murukku Recipe With Step By Step Photos:

  • Soak channa dal for 1 hour.
  • Make a paste with red chilli powder and garlic cloves and keep aside.
  • Take a wide bowl and add rice flour, fried gram flour, asafoetida, melted butter, salt and mix well.
  • Add chilli garlic paste, soaked channa dal and finely chopped curry leaves and mix well.
  • Add water little by little to make a smooth non sticky dough.
  • Check the salt and divide the dough into small lemon size balls.
  • Now take a plastic sheet and grease with few drops of oil.
  • Place one ball at a time in the centre of the sheet and flatten with your fingers.
  • Do the same for the remaining dough.
  • Now heat a kadai with enough oil to deep fry.
  • When the oil is hot slowly leave the flattened thattai murukku in hot oil and deep fry on both sides until the bubbles completely stops.
  • Remove from oil and drain in paper towel to remove the excess of oil.
  • Allow it to cool and store in a air tight container.

  • Grease a plastic sheet with oil and place one ball at a time in the centre of the sheet and flatten with your fingers.

  • Slowly leave the flattened thattai murukku in hot oil and deep fry on both sides until the bubbles completely stops.
