Mutton Masala Recipe – South Indian Style Mutton Masala. This mutton pieces/ lamb pieces cooked in a masala style (thick gravy and mouth watering goat recipe) with oions, tomatoes, fresh pappercorns, ginger, garlic and embedded in the masalas and goat pieces. This goat masala goes well with sambar rice, rasam, roti or parata.

Mutton Masala/ Goat Masala

Ingredients For Mutton Masala Recipe:

  • 750g mutton (goat or lamb)
  • 2 medium size onion, finely chopped
  • 2 medium size tomato, finely chopped
  • 2 small green chilies, slit into half
  • 1 tsp red chili powder or to taste
  • 2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala powder
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds (optional)
  • few curry leaves
  • some coriander leaves, roughly chopped
  • salt to taste
  • 3 tbsp oil

Paste ingredients:

  • 5 garlic cloves
  • 2″ ginger root
  • 1 tbsp peppercorns

How To Make Mutton Masala Recipe:

  • Clean and cut the mutton into bite size pieces. Wash and drain the water.
  • Take a pressure cooker and add washed mutton pieces, red chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, salt and 1/4 cup of water .
  • Mix well and close the pressure cooker with lid and cook until the mutton pieces become soft and tender.
  • Make a paste with ginger, garlic and peppercorns and keep aside.
  • Now heat a pan with oil and add mustard seeds.
  • When they start to pop add finely chopped onions, green chilies and curry leaves.
  • Saute on medium high flame until they turn into nice golden brown color.
  • Add ginger garlic peppercorn paste and saute until the raw smell disappears or the oil separates from the mixture.
  • Add chopped tomatoes and saute util the tomatoes become mushy and soft.
  • Now add cooked mutton pieces along with water and mix well.
  • Cook on medium flame until the water evaporates or your desired consistency. In-between stir well, so that they don’t burn at the bottom.
  • Add garam masala powder and mix well and cook for further 1-2 mins.
  • Finally check the salt and add coriander leaves and give a good mix.
  • Remove from stove and serve hot or warm with rice, sambar rice, roti, parata or naan.
