Meen Kuzhambu (Fish Curry/ Chepala Pulusu) Recipe

Fish curry is very spicy and tasty. Traditionally it’s cooked in clay pot, where the fish is cooked in spicy gravy of onions, tomatoes, tamarind juice and spices sautéed in sesame oil. There are different styles of meen kuzhambu. But this one is simple Meen Kuzhambu – South Indian Style Fish Curry Recipe

Ingredients For Fish Curry:

  • 1/2 kg fish (cleaned and washed)
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 medium size tomatoes, finely chopped
  • lemon size tamarind
  • 2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • few curry leaves
  • few coriander leaves
  • 2 tbsp sesame seed oil or any cooking oil

How To Make Fish Curry (Meen Kulambu/ Chepala Pulusu) Recipe:

  • Clean, wash the fish and drain all the water and keep aside.
  • Clean, wash and soak the tamarind in hot water and extract the juice from it and discard the pulp.
  • Heat a pan with oil and add mustard seeds and fenugreek seeds.
  • When they start to pop add chopped onions and curry leaves.
  • Saute on medium flame until they turn into nice golden yellow color.
  • Add chopped tomatoes and salt. saute until tomatoes become mushy.
  • Add chilli powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder. Saute for few seconds.
  • Add tamarind extract and mix well. Check the taste and adjust tamarind mixture, spice powder and salt according to your taste.
  • Cook on medium low flame for 15-20 mins. After 20 minutes the oil would start to float on top. That is a sure sign that the gravy has been cooked.
  • Now add washed fish pieces and stir well.
  • Cover with a lid and cook for further 10-12 mins or until the fish pieces become tender. In-between stir gently without breaking the fish pieces, so that the fish pieces don’t burn at the bottom.
  • Finally check the salt and add chopped coriander leaves.
  • Now your easy and tasty South Indian Style Meen Kuzhambu is ready to enjoy.
