Cabbage channa dal subzi tastes yummy and is an excellent combo with rice, roti,paratha, etc…. Infact, you will never make out the taste or smell of cabbage in this gravy as it would have blended well with channa dal (senaga pappu or kadala paruppu) in the curry.

Ingredients for cabbage sabzi with channa dal:

  • 1/2 kg cabbage
  • 1 cup channa dal
  • 1 onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 tomato (finely chopped)
  • 1 tsp chilli powder or to taste
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • salt to taste
  • few coriander leaves for garnishing
  •  green chillies
  • 1 inch ginger piece
  • 4 garlic flakes
  • 2 tbsp of freshly grated coconut
  •  1 tsp mustard seeds
  • few curry leaves
  • 2 tbsp oil

cabbage senaga pappu curry

Cabbage kadala paruppu curry or cabbage senaga pappu curry preparation:

  • Chop the cabbage into medium size thin strips.
  • Clean and wash the channa dal (kadala paruppu/ senaga pappu) and soak for 30- 60 mins.
  • Pressure cook thiny chopped cabbage and dal with 1 cup of water for 3-4 whistles .
  • Remove from heat and keep aside.
  • Make a paste with ginger, garlic, green chillies and coconut and keep aside.
  • Heat a deep pan with oil and add mustard seeds.
  • When they start to pop add curry leaves, chopped onions and saute till the onions become light golden brown in color.
  • Add chopped tomatoes, salt and saute till the tomatoes become juicy.
  • Add ginger garlic coconut paste and saute till the raw smell disappears.
  • Add chilli powder, turmeric powder and mix well.
  • Saute for few seconds.
  • Add pressure cooked cabbage and channa dal (bengal gram/ kadala paruppu).
  • Combine well and cover with a lid and cook on low flame for 5-7 mins.
  • Finally adjust salt and garnish with coriander leaves.
  • Finally remove from  stove and transfer into serving bowl.
  • Serve cabbage channa dal hot or warm with white rice, roti, chappathi, paratha, etc…
